Product Description
The difference between this medal and a flat devotional piece is the ground it stands on. Behind the saint, a sunburst fans out in wide polished rays, and the gaps between them are cut back with a fine stipple that goes dark under the oxidation — so the rays stay bright while everything behind them recedes. It reads as light coming off the figure rather than as a pattern printed behind him.
St. Sebastian is bound at the centre, wrists tied above his head to the trunk, arrows through his chest and side, ropes running down to the mound under his feet. The rim is raised and lettered around the whole oval: SAINT SEBASTIAN over the head, PROTECT US under the foot, with a small cross set at the left and right shoulder. The reverse carries the same inscription family as the rest of the series in five raised lines — ST. SEBASTIAN, BESTOWMENT, OF STRENGTH, AND PROTECTION, PRAY FOR US — closed above and below by scroll ornaments on the stippled field.
Measurements: 22.1mm / 0.87in across the widest point, 38.1mm / 1.50in in total height including the bail, 5.93g / 0.21oz. The bail is a tapered teardrop, wide enough for a box chain or a leather cord, and the pendant is nickel-free and lead-free — the campaign photography carries the Lead-Free, Nickel-Free and Allergy-Free marks straight on the image, so the compliance claim travels with the asset. The oval drops lower on the chest than a round medal of the same weight, which is why it tends to be the shape men actually wear day to day — long enough to sit below a t-shirt collar, flat enough not to catch.
